Bergolo ENG

Bergolo, a small medieval town

Bergolo is one of the smallest villages in Italy, in the province of Cuneo. Some evidence suggests that it dates back to the year 1091, when the village was included in the territory of Marquis Bonifacio del Vasto. This village is closely linked to the Gothic Bormida route because of its medieval architecture and cultural and historical heritage.

Known as “the stone village”,

Bergolo retains its Gothic-style historic buildings, attracting tourists interested in art and culture. Conservation and restoration efforts have preserved the authenticity of the village, strengthening the cultural identity of the Gothic Bormida area.

Throughout the village, numerous works of art highlight Bergolo's cultural vocation, reflecting its many artistic initiatives, such as the “Bergolo paese di pietra” (the town of stone) competition. Additionally, visitors can find works of art and quotations from the Divine Comedy as well as Charon's boat near the Theater. We also mention the Stone Theater, which, although a very recent work, is a place of important activities and events for the whole area.

A Journey Through History

Walking through the narrow streets of Bergolo, one is immersed in the village's rich history. The old stone houses, many of which date back centuries, tell stories of times past. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (La chiesa della Natività di Maria Vergine), is located along the village's main street. Walking to the top of the village, one reaches the Chapel of San Rocco (Cappella di San Rocco) in pure Romanesque style.

Panoramic Views

There is no better way to appreciate Bergolo's natural beauty than from one of its many viewpoints. Surrounded by vineyards and forests, these viewpoints offer a unique perspective of the Langhe, all the way to the Alps. Whether at sunrise or sunset, the views from Bergolo are truly breathtaking.

Gastronomic Delights

Typical Piedmontese cuisine is an integral part of the experience in Bergolo. The local cuisine, celebrated for its traditional dishes such as truffles, cheeses, cured meats, and renowned wines, offers a complete culinary journey. Bergolo enchants those who seek to explore the nature and culture of Piedmont.

The two local restaurants —L'Bunet and Osteria Langhet— offer quality traditional dishes and, in the right season, you can also enjoy the renowned white truffle along with delicious tajarin. For those who wish to enjoy a delightful aperitive or a quick snack while taking in a breathtaking view, ParolePerdute is the perfect place.

Outdoor Activities and Cultural Events

Bergolo, like Levice, is situated along the Great Langhe Crossing.

Here, nature lovers can explore the surrounding nature through picturesque forest trails, lavender fields, and green meadows. There are options suitable for all levels, from leisurely hikes to more challenging adventures.

Bergolo is also known for its lively cultural events and festivals, which provide visitors with the opportunity to immerse themselves in local life and culture.

Some of these festivals are the Ecofestival, a festival of environmental sustainability and, Bergolo Fest, a festival created to celebrate local products and creativity.

Both are celebrated every year. The first in August and the second on the first weekend of September and are organised by the Bergolo Municipality with the sponsorship of the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation. They also had the support of associations working in the village: New Wellness Education, Asociazione Vagamondo and Parco Culturale Alta Langa.

In both festivals you will find craft markets and local producers, workshops for children and adults, delicious food from the world prepared with vegetables from the village vegetable garden, guided tours of the educational garden, performances, live music and much more.
