Non era solo volontariato…

20 settembre

Nuove persone, nuovi eventi, nuovi luoghi, nuove storie.

Ancora non so come dire addio.
Entrare dalla porta con un Buongiorno
e vedere tutti i loro volti illuminarsi.

Che bella che sei oggi
e i baci sulle guance.

Come ti chiami?
Dove sei nata?
Cosa facciamo oggi?

hanno lasciato qualcosa in me.

A Bergolo.

Con affetto,
Daniela

One last time… Keep Up With Parco 💛

When I wrote the first Keep Up With Parco back in November, I had no idea that almost a year later, I would be writing the last one. For almost a year, I kept coming back here to tell you what had happened. Another few weeks, another adventure. New people, new events, new places, new stories. I wrote about the big moments and the small ones. About freezing apartments and unexpected trips, team-building, festivals and goodbyes. I introduced you to new volunteers, told you about the places I visited and the things we were creating together.

But somewhere between all those posts, without really realizing it, I wasn't just documenting what Parco was doing. I was documenting my life here. I came to Italy thinking I would spend a few months volunteering in a small village in the countryside. I didn't know that somewhere along the way, between cappuccinos and focaccia for breakfast, aperitivos at Fillanda that somehow always ended later than planned, random conversations in the streets, and all the little routines of everyday life, Monesiglio would start feeling like home.

I didn't know how many people I would meet. How many volunteers would come into my life, each one bringing their own stories, ideas, and little pieces of the world with them. Some stayed for a few weeks, some for longer, and somehow we all ended up sharing this strange little chapter of our lives in Alta Langa. And a special shout-out to my Danish princess, Astrid — who was here from January and somehow became the volunteer who stayed the longest during my time at Parco. You pushed me to see the possibilities and potential in the things we could create together. We shared so many moments, ideas, and conversations, and I'm still missing you, girll. 💛

Then there was Bergolo. Ten days of the Youth Exchange that somehow felt like much more than just ten days. People from different countries arriving as strangers and leaving with inside jokes, memories, and friendships. I still think about the conversations, the laughter, and all those moments that happened somewhere between the official activities.

And somewhere in between all of that, there was the everyday life of Parco. The random conversations in the office, last-minute ideas, jokes that probably stopped making sense after a while, trying to figure things out as we went, and somehow always having something new happening.

And Rita, of course. I don't think I could write this without mentioning you. Somehow, between all the work, events, and everything in between, we created our own collection of jokes. From all the random conversations and laughter to working side by side through months that somehow went by way too fast — you became a much bigger part of this experience than just "my coordinator."

There were also all the events that at some point became part of the rhythm of life here. Festivals, workshops, cinema nights, Speaking Club, dinners, concerts, projects, and all the moments behind them. The preparation, the chaos, the people showing up, things not always going according to plan, and then somehow working out anyway.

Parco had its ups and downs, as everything does. But looking back, I don't think I'll remember the difficult days as much as I'll remember the people standing next to me during them.

And then there was the nursing home.
I still don't know how to say goodbye.
Walking through the door with Buongiorno
and seeing all their faces light up.

Che bella che sei oggi
and kisses on my cheeks.
Stories that I'd heard before
but never got tired of hearing.

Come ti chiami?
Dove sei nata?
Cosa facciamo oggi?

And somewhere in the middle of it all:
Dammi una caramella.

I hope somewhere in the laughter
and the games we used to play
I left a little piece of me,
the way they left
something in me.

Thank you, Alessia, for letting me join you in this place and making it such an important part of my time in Italy. I don't think you will ever fully understand how much those mornings and afternoons meant to me.

And then there was my Italian family. The people who made sure I never really felt like a stranger here. The ones who invited me to their home, shared their table with me, checked how I was doing, and slowly became part of my everyday life. I came here alone, and somehow I left with family in Italy. I will never forget you, and I will for sure come back to visit!

And to all the people of Monesiglio — thank you.
For every “Ciao Daniela” when I walked through the village.
Every conversation.
Every time someone stopped to ask me how I was.
For making a girl who arrived here without speaking Italian feel like she belonged.

And now, reading all these posts back, I can see something I probably couldn't see while I was living it: how much changed. Not only around me, but in me too. The girl who arrived in Monesiglio last October without really knowing what to expect slowly built routines, friendships, and a life she wasn't planning to find.

I came here thinking I was coming to volunteer. But I left with stories I couldn't have planned, friendships I didn't expect, people I will miss more than I know how to explain, and a place that became much more than just another stop along the way.

So I guess this is not just the last Keep Up With Parco.

It's goodbye to the breakfasts with cappuccino and focaccia.
To the Fillanda aperitivos.
To the events we created together.
To the volunteers who came and went.
To Bergolo.
To Residenza Alta Langa.
To my Italian family.
And to all the lovely people who turned Monesiglio into home.

Thank you for letting me be part of your stories!

And thank you for becoming such a big part of mine!

One last time… thank you for keeping up with Parco. 💛

With love,
Daniela
